Misinformation is not a new phenomenon, but in the Digital Age it has become easier to spread and share. Political lies have received the most attention recently, but misinformation abounds in other arenas including science, medicine, and more. Journalists have a duty to arm their audiences with tools to make critical judgments on what they are reading, watching and hearing — a practice Americans are calling “news literacy”.
In this session, moderated by Facebook’s Áine Kerr, Dan Gillmor will report on five key ways news media can meet this vital responsibility, and in the process build more trust with audiences. De Correspondent’s Founder, Rob Winjberg, will explain how this kind of deep engagement with readers has become central to the organisation’s editorial mission.
